What is a Skoda VIN decoder?
A Skoda VIN decoder is a tool that reads the special 17-digit number found on every Skoda car. This number, called a VIN, tells you the car’s model, engine type, trim level, and where it was made.
You can also use it to check the car’s history, like past records or repairs. It’s very helpful when buying or selling a used Skoda.
What Does a Skoda VIN Code Tell You?
A 17-digit Skoda VIN is a special code that makes it different from every other car, and it contains detailed information about the vehicle. Note that, the letters I, O, and Q are not used in VINs because they look too much like the numbers 1 and 0.
The VIN is divided into three structures
World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI): Characters 1 to 3
This identifies the country where it was manufactured.
- Skoda cars from the Czech Republic use VINs that start with TMB.
- Cars made in India often start with MA to ME.
- Japan uses VINs starting with J.
- China uses L at the beginning.
- In North America, VINs start with numbers: 1 for the USA, 2 for Canada.
- In Europe, VINs start with letters from S to Z.
Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS): Characters 4 to 9
The 4th to 9th characters in a Skoda VIN are called the vehicle descriptor section. This part tells you more details about the car, like the model, engine, and body type. Car makers can choose how to set this up.
Skoda uses this section to show:
- Body style (like hatchback or estate)
- Engine type and power
- Safety features (like airbags)
- The type of drive (like front-wheel drive)
- A security code in the 9th spot to help check if the VIN is real
For Skoda Enyaq electric cars, the 5th character in the VIN shows how powerful the car is:
- A = 109 kW
- B = 132 kW
- C = 150 kW
- The type of drive (like front-wheel drive)
- F = 220 kW
Here’s an example VIN: TMBJR8NX*PYxxxx (for a Skoda Octavia Combi with a 1.5 TSI engine):
- J = estate car, left-hand drive, front-wheel drive
- R = 1.5 TSI engine with 110 kW
- 8 = 8 airbags (2 front, 4 side, 2 head)
- NX = model is an Octavia
- * = a special code that helps confirm the VIN is real
- P = model year 2023
- Y = made in Mladá Boleslav factory
For electric cars, there’s no single symbol that says “electric,” but a combination of letters in the 5th, 7th, and 8th spots can tell you it is. The 9th digit is the check digit or security code, and it’s used to verify the Skoda VIN is authentic and not just randomly invented.
Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS): Characters 10 to 17
The last part of the VIN, from positions 10 to 17, is called the Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS). This part is unique to each car and helps tell it apart from all others.
Skoda uses a system based on the American style of VINs. Here’s how it works:
- The 10th character shows the model year of the car (not always the same as the year it was built). This 10th character cannot be repeated for 30 years to avoid confusion. The possible model years are presented in the VIN to year chart below:

The 11th character shows the factory where the car was made:
- Numbers 0 to 4 = one of the Škoda plants in Mladá Boleslav.
- Numbers 5 to 9 = the plant in Kvasiny.
- Sometimes, letters can also be used instead of numbers.
This part of the VIN helps you know exactly when and where the car was made.
- The 12th to 17th Characters make up the unique sequential number (serial number) of the Skoda. This number is the production number when the car was rolled out of the factory.
The eleventh character shows the vehicle’s assembly or manufacturing plant. The locations are represented with these characters:
- A, F, and K = Munich, Germany
- B, C, D, G = Dingolfing, Germany
- E, J, P = Regensburg, Germany
- L = Greer, South Carolina, United States

The excitement of changing your ride may disappear if you end up buying a car with serious hidden issues. Here are a few out of many reasons why you should get a car history report:
Write-Off Check:
Tells you if the car was written off by an insurance company after an accident. Some write-offs can be unsafe, even if they look fine.
Outstanding Finance Check:
Shows if the car still has unpaid finance or loans on it. You could lose the car if the debt isn’t cleared.
Verify MOT History:
Gives a record of all past MOT tests, including failures. It helps you see how well the car has been looked after.
Detect Mileage Discrepancy:
