Check a Vehicle's SORN Status

Need to do a quick SORN check? Simply enter the registration number to find out if a car is officially off the road. Our car check tool instantly shows you the vehicle’s MOT and tax status.

What Does SORN Mean?

SORN stands for Statutory Off-Road Notification. It’s a way to tell the DVLA that you’re keeping your car off public roads and won’t be driving it. When you declare SORN, you don’t have to pay road tax or insure the vehicle.

You must do a DVLA SORN check before buying any used car. If someone drives a SORN vehicle on the road, they can get a big fine. That’s why checking the SORN status is so important for both buyers and sellers.

The SORN Rules For Car Owners and Buyers

Understanding what SORN means helps you avoid getting fined or buying a problem car from someone dishonest. Some of the rules include:

When to do a SORN Check or declaration?

Many different situations require you to either declare SORN yourself or check SORN status if you’re buying a used vehicle. Here are some instances:

If your vehicle is uninsured or untaxed

When your car tax or insurance runs out, and you're not renewing them right away, you must declare SORN immediately to avoid penalties.

Planning a long-term storage

When you're storing a classic car over winter or keeping a vehicle you'll use later, SORN saves you money on tax and insurance.

Your vehicle is under extensive repair

If your car needs repairs that will take weeks or months, declaring it SORN means you don't pay tax while it's fixed.

You lost your V5C logbook

If you misplaced your logbook and cannot tax it without a DVLA reminder, you may need to SORN the car.

You bought a vehicle for scrapping

You need to SORN a car if it’s acquired for breaking down parts or scrapping.

Plan to travel for an extended period

Going abroad for work or vacation for months? Put your car on SORN so you don't waste money on tax and insurance.

How to Put Your Vehicle Back on the Road After Declaring SORN

Getting your car road-legal again after SORN is easy if you follow these important steps:

Fact 1

Step 1: Get valid car insurance

Enter the vehicle registration number in the search bar or search by VIN.

Fact 2

Step 2: Book an MOT test

If your MOT has expired, get your car tested and passed before taxing it. You can drive to a pre-booked MOT test even with SORN.

Fact 3

Step 3: Tax your vehicle

Go online to the DVLA tax your vehicle service page or use the phone service to pay road tax. Your SORN ends automatically when you do this.

Fact 3

Step 4: Update your details

Make sure your address and other information with DVLA is correct before you start driving again.

The DVLA receives your tax payment and cancels the SORN straight away. You don’t need to do anything else.

Are there penalties for Not Notifying DVLA about SORN?

Yes, the penalties for not declaring SORN are serious and expensive. If you don’t tax your car or make a SORN declaration, you’ll get an automatic fine of £80. This penalty comes in the post, whether you were driving the car or not.

If you ignore the fine and still don’t sort things out, it gets much worse. The DVLA can take you to court, where you might face a fine of up to £1,000. They can also clamp your vehicle or take it away completely.

When I was selling a vehicle I had multiple people ask for documentation to show we had a clean title and for the window sticker, which unfortunately we no longer had. Smart Car Check helped us get both so we can show potential buyers. Recommended.

FAQ about SORN Check

Use our free SORN check tool at the top of this page. Enter the registration number and click search. You’ll see if the car is currently SORN, taxed, or if the tax has expired.

Yes, you must declare SORN if your car is off the road and you’re not paying tax on it. There’s no grace period or exceptions. Even if you only stop driving for a few weeks, you still need to tell the DVLA by making a SORN declaration online or by post.

Yes, but only to a pre-booked MOT test appointment. You can drive straight to the garage and straight back home again. You cannot make any other stops or use the car for anything else. Keep your MOT booking confirmation with you as proof if the police stop you.

You’ll get an automatic £80 fine in the post from DVLA. If you ignore it, the fine can increase up to £1,000 in court. The DVLA might also clamp your car or take it away. They check all untaxed vehicles every month and send out penalties automatically without warning.

No, nothing happens automatically when your tax runs out. You must actively tell the DVLA that your car is off the road. If you don’t make a SORN declaration yourself, you’ll get fined even if the car is sitting in your garage, not being used at all.

Yes, you can sell any car with SORN status. But you must tell the buyer it’s SORN, so they know they can’t drive it away. When you sell, fill in the green slip from your V5C logbook and send it to DVLA. The new owner must tax it or make their own SORN.

You don’t need to cancel SORN separately. It ends automatically when you tax your vehicle online, by phone, or at the post office. Just make sure you have valid insurance and an MOT first.

You cannot drive it home from the seller. You must transport it on a trailer or truck. Then you need to get insurance and an MOT if needed. Finally, tax the vehicle online to cancel the SORN. Only after all this is done can you legally drive your new car on the road.

Yes, after declaring your vehicle SORN, you will automatically get refunded for any unused vehicle tax (VED) by the DVLA, regardless of whether you paid for 6 or 12 months upfront.
